Please read the following collar safety tips for making sure your pet stays happy and healthy!
Choose a collar that fits properly
You should be able to fit your thumb OR two fingers between your dog's collar and neck to ensure proper fit. A collar that is too tight is uncomfortable and introduces a danger of strangulation, while a collar that is too loose allows the dog to slip out. Make sure to check the fit while your dog is in different positions (standing and laying down) to make sure it's comfortable. If your dog is growing, keep checking the fit frequently and adjust as needed
Secure your dog's tags
ID tags are very important for making sure that your dog gets home safely should they be found, but the dangling metal pieces can present a risk of getting caught or tangled. Look for a cloth pouch designed to hold tags, or a custom metal ID plate that lies flat on the collar. As a back-up method, consider the benefits of microchipping your dog (just make sure to keep your contact information up to date!)
Be cautious when leaving dogs on a lead
Be mindful of leaving your pet tied anywhere they might get caught, tangled, or dangle over an edge
Remove the collar when in a crate or kennel
This reduces the risk of their collar getting caught on a protrusion, especially when no one is home
Remove the collar when at play with another dog
Remove the temptation for another dog to bite at the collar and potentially get stuck or injured. Never leave playing dogs unattended
